Eric Single
(Ph.D., Sociology, Columbia U., 1973) is Professor of Public Health
Sciences at theUniversity of Toronto, Policy Advisory Emeritus for the
Canadian Centre on Substance Abuse (CCSA) and Honorary Professor at
Curtin University in Perth, Australia. He has more than 30 years of
experience in research on addictions issues and has authored or
co-authored 18 books, 27 book chapters, 60 journal articles, and
numerous reports and other publications. Dr. Single was the first
Research Director of the CCSA, organizer and first chair of the CCSA
National Working Group on Addictions Policy and founding Director of
the Collaborative Program on addictions at the University of Toronto.
In 1996 he completed a major study estimating morbidity, mortality and
economic costs attributable to alcohol, tobacco and illicit drugs in
Canada. In 1997, Dr. Single conducted an evaluation of Australia's
National Drug Strategy on behalf of the Australian government.
He has been a participant or director of eight WHO projects. Dr. Single
is the principal author of the WHO International Guidelines for
Estimating the Costs of Substance Abuse, and a co-author of the WHO
Alcohol Monitoring Guidelines. He has also coordinated a major review
underpinning new drinking guidelines for the Australia and evaluated
the Alcohol Advisory Council of New Zealand. Although partly retired,
Dr. Single continues to consult regularly with national and
international agencies on methodology, epidemiological monitoring and
policy issues. |
