President's Letter

The International Center for Alcohol Policies (ICAP) was founded in 1995. Over the years, it has established a reputation for innovation and objectivity. It has succeeded in developing effective partnerships involving governments, non-governmental organizations, the beverage alcohol industry and the scientific and public health communities.  It is now recognized as an important source of information and advice on the key alcohol policy questions of the day.

All of us involved in ICAP share a conviction that beverage alcohol deserves to be treated with respect, both by those who produce and sell it and by those who choose to consume it. Responsible marketing is just as important as responsible drinking. By bringing together all those with a legitimate interest in alcohol policy, ICAP is uniquely placed to promote a transparent and balanced approach to policy development.

Having spent 10 years working for a non-governmental organization in the UK and another 10 working for the World Health Organization (WHO), I am more optimistic now than at any time in the past about the possibility of promoting responsible drinking patterns, at the same time as reducing alcohol abuse worldwide. The reason for my optimism is that I have seen again and again how much common ground exists between governments, industry and scientists and how willing those with open minds are to come together and explore that common ground in working partnerships.

We make no secret of the fact that ICAP is sponsored by major beverage alcohol producers. We see their financial support as testimony to the seriousness of their intentions. In no way does our source of funding diminish our commitment to public health and to enhancing the quality of life of individuals throughout the world.

The materials included on this web site speak for themselves. They represent some of the outputs of our work since 1995 and some of the directions which we are currently pursuing. We have made a sustained and conscious effort to base our reports on the best available evidence and to avoid partisan points of view. We would very much welcome comments, both on the materials already included on the site and on suggestions for future work. In that way, our network of partnerships can continue to expand – with your involvement and your participation.
