Impaired driving that involves alcohol consumption is sometimes referred to as “alcohol-impaired driving,” “driving under the influence” (DUI), “driving while impaired” (DWI), “drunk driving,” or “drink-driving.” While the terminology may differ, there is broad agreement that alcohol-impaired driving is one of the leading causes of road traffic casualties. The severity of the impairment relates to the amount of alcohol consumed. The primary debate about drinking and driving revolves around the most effective measures for prevention—including where to set legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limits and how best to enforce them.
