Symposium on Moderate Alcohol Consumption: Health Risk and Benefits

The purpose of the symposium was to bring leading international experts on various aspects of health related to alcohol together to discuss the risks and benefits associated with moderate alcohol consumption.  The conference was jointly organized by ICAP and the Institute on Lifestyle and Health of the Boston University School of Medicine and was chaired by Professor R. Curtis Ellison.  During the two day conference, five sessions were held to examine and discuss the available scientific data on the health effects of moderate drinking.  The sessions were (1) Moderate Drinking and Cardiovascular Disease, (2) Moderate Drinking and Other Health Outcomes, (3) Influences at the Population Level, (4) Implications for Future Research, and (5) The Message for Moderate Drinking.  The presentations of scientific studies and data during each session were followed by discussion, which provided implications for future research, providing information to the public and alcohol policy.
