It is estimated that moonshine, unrecorded and non-commercial alcohol, may account for as much as fifty percent of total alcohol consumption worldwide. In 2003, ICAP published the results of research into this largely neglected area of alcohol studies that examines patterns of local alcohol consumption in 6 countries –Brazil, India, Mexico, Russia, Tanzania and Zambia.
Moonshine Markets, explores the who, what, where, how and why of local alcohol in these six countries. Using a common methodology, each of the studies provides a rich accounting of the varied customs and rituals surrounding non-commercial alcohol, its history, cultural significance and the legal and socioeconomic framework of its production and consumption. Reports from each of the countries studied are included and discuss the implications for public health, policy and the alcohol beverage industry.
